Why study English?

The second most spoken language in the world and the lingua franca in many professions, English is a culturally rich, exciting field of study, with some 380 million native speakers. Only Chinese and Hindi have more native speakers while Spanish is similar in number. English is also the dominant member of the Germanic languages. It has lingua franca status in many parts of the world, due to the military, economic, scientific, political and cultural influence of the British Empire in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries and that of the United States from the early 20th century to the present.

Through the global influence of native English speakers in cinema, music, broadcasting, science, and the Internet in recent decades, English is now the most widely learned second language in the world, although other colonial languages such as French and Spanish retain much importance worldwide.

Multinational companies creates multinational opportunities

It used to be that if anyone did leave the country to work, that person was high up on the corporate food chain, and they stayed overseas only a few years. Not anymore. Opportunities are growing and becoming more readily available earlier in an engineer’s career. Careers are no longer isolated into specific country.

Software outsourcing industry is growing fast. After China and India, Russia is now the third-largest software outsourcing destination in the world. In 2005, software exports reached an estimated $1 billion, up from just $120 million in 2000 and a 33% increase from 2004. The knowledge of English language is critical for engineer who wants efficiently works in software industry. Big companies like SUN, Intel, IBM, Google offering completive salaries on local labor markets of Russia , India , China and English language required to get good position in these companies.

Ukraine's software development industry is underdeveloped but growing fast. However, as domestic and foreign firms position themselves to take advantage of the global trend toward more outsourcing, the industry is feeling the pinch from a limited number of programmers and rising operating costs.

Although Ukraine has anywhere from between 300 and 400 software development firms, the country's market is far from mature. About 70 percent of these companies are small or medium-sized businesses

You commonly hear two phrases in China's technology world: "there's so much opportunity here" and "this is the new Silicon Valley".

Whether there's truth in either will be seen over time but China's software industry - spanning indigenous software vendors, overseas arms of foreign companies and outsourcing operations, for example doing application development for users in China and overseas - is certainly growing at phenomenal speed.
